Here are some of my new years resolutions:
-Read a book a month
-Watch a new movie every week (failing already but it's ok)
-Make 10 shorts before 2011
-Come up with 10 new ideas every week, I don't have to go through with them but I have to think of them (this one is starting out VERY difficult!!! But I'm glad I'm forcing myself to do it. I've thought of some neat things so far.)

Winter Break was a tough time for me. We had to put down my dog that I've had since I was 2 years old. Coming out of preschool to see her sitting in the car with my mom is my earliest memory that I vividly remember. She was sick and almost 18 years old. It fucking sucks. We put her down on the 28th of January and buried her on the 30th.

Day 2: Breckenridge // Red Rocks

Well okay, I understand now why people love Colorado so much. We drove up to Breckenridge, which is about an hour and a half outside of Denver. The town is the cutest place I've ever been, and it's right in the middle of the mountains so the views are insane. We took a chair lift up to the top of a peak and although it was SERIOUSLY TERRIFYING it was definitely worth it. I took over 200 pictures but I'm only posting a few... once I get home, I'm going to purchase my Flickr account so I can post the rest into a set, then I'll post a link. Until then, enjoy these!

Mmmmmmmm. Then we went to Red Rocks, which is INSANELY BEAUTIFUL ALSO, to see this great Beatles tribute band called "1964: A Tribute". It was so great, except we had to walk up about a million stairs to get to our seats. But again, worth it.

I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that at age 20 I haven't left the eastern standard time zone. But now I have! I'm in Denver for the weekend visiting my brother. I haven't been blown away by it yet, as I often hear that people are, but it is a beautiful city. I haven't been exploring too much yet though, so we'll see if my opinion changes. So far we have just been relaxing, Thursday was a full and tiresome day of travel that involved waking up at 5:35am, which is ungodly and cruel.

This is my paternal grandfather's grand piano. He was a jazz pianist and a teacher. He died when I was 11 or 12. You can see his memorial poster that they displayed at either Syracuse Jazz Fest or the SAMMY Awards, I can't remember which.

Foster Chihuahuas - best photo job ever

My friend's mom is a hair dresser slash chihuahua rescuer. She traded me a cut and color for me to take pictures of her rescued dogs... some foster, but mostly hers. I love all of these dogs and most of them have super sad stories, but Laurel is such a good mom to them that they all recover so much and turn out very sweetly. Most of them have been through a lot - debarking, physical abuse, living in cages, over-breeding, and more stupid things that make me hate humans. But she wanted black and white pictures of her dogs specifically that she could frame and have. I took some pictures of the foster ones, too. This was a lot of fun because I just got to sit in the sunlight for 2 hours with tons of tiny dogs and just pet them. Best.

I was really happy to do this because I think that dog rescue and adoption is a really important issue. Not a lot of people are aware of the abuse that dogs go through in puppy mills and puppy farms, and because of that, they unknowingly support intense abuse and murder. Buying from pet stores and Amish people may seem like a harmless thing but it is SERIOUSLY not okay! If you want a puppy, you can ADOPT a puppy. If you want a purebred, you can ADOPT a purebred. There is zero advantage to buying from a pet store or a puppy farm. ZERO!!!

This is Sadie-Sue or Susan, who has a beautiful coat of red, orange and golden brown that you obviously can't see in this picture because of the B&W. She is so sweet and loving.

This is Sadie's sister Ruby, who is Kevin's girlfriend. She and her sister were given to Laurel by a mother who complained that they were "too much of a hassle", which, if you sit with these dogs for 1 minute, you will find super hard to believe. The mother was young and was not prepared for the responsibilities of taking care of these 2 awesome babies.

This is Baby Hue, Maxx's dog. He also goes by (phonetically) "Bibba-Hoo".

This is Libby-Lou. She is super shy and skittish. It was really hard to take pictures of her because she was shaky and nervous from the camera and the noises it was making. =(

This is Teddy. He was super shy too. I think he is the only non-chihuahua dog living at the house. He hid under a lounge chair and I had to lay on the ground to snap this.

last but not least... This is Gertrude. She is the oldest of these dogs. They had her before they started doing Chihuahua rescue. She's the queen.

This is Bigs. You can't tell too much from this picture, but he is huge. Definitely part chihuahua, but probably part Italian greyhound as well. He is super friendly!

This is Figaro. He definitely looks like a mobster. He has a lot of issues with his hair... they don't really know why. He can grow it out, but it starts falling out in patches. So he has just a weird mess of hair. But he's so cute and nice.

This is Bub. He's tiny and has grey hair.

There were a lot more dogs that I didn't get to take pictures of, but they are all great. I loved being over there and just sitting with two dogs on my lap and one on a table next to me, giving unlimited pets and receiving unlimited kisses. I can't wait until I can adopt (ADOPT ADOPT ADOPT ADOPT) a dog. Bad idea for a college kid going from apartment to apartment... someday, though, and I look forward to it!

For a long time I have been into Cirque du Soleil which, if you don't know, is a Canadian circus that is just the coolest thing ever (www.cirquedusoleil.com). I have a DVD of one of their shows, Varekai, and there is a comedy part where one of the clowns "sings" a song:

I always really liked this part of the show because I thought it was funny, but also I thought the song was really beautiful. I just started studying French, and the other day while doing my homework this song got stuck in my head - which was kind of out of the blue because I haven't watched Varekai in a really long time. I then got on a mission to find this song so I could listen to it on repeat for forever.

After much internetting, I found out that the singer of this particular version of Ne me quitte pas (a well-known French song) was Nina Simone, an American singer and activist who knew success through the 50s and 60s, later becoming active in the Civil Rights movement.

So, I bought an "Essentials" album by Nina Simone to check it out more. Then, upon listening to it, I heard one of my favorite Feist songs: "Sea Lion Woman". Nina's is called "See-Line Woman", and was obviously recorded way before Feist and is completely bad-ass:

a journey through many states

This weekend I drove to North Carolina with Pat and his family through Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and finally to NC (the most states I've been to in two days). We are staying very close to the beach in the Outer Banks and it is so beautiful. On the way down, I saw a TON of clouds. The best ones were in Virginia, which the triptych is of. The ones in NC aren't bad but Virginia was definitely the best. We saw the fireworks in NC on the beach and it was extremely pleasant. Pat took some awesome pictures of baby ducks today which I hope to post a few of when he's done editing.

I took a ton of photos but I'm only posting a few as to not overwhelm.

My mom, her husband and my cousin all came to visit me in Boston this week. Having people from out of town here is a great excuse to be super touristy, since I don't usually hit up those types of places. We went all over downtown, in Faneuil Hall and the aquarium area on the ocean, to the North End. Of course to top it all off I brought my camera and took pics of everything. Whatever it was awesome.

Happy family!!!

So of course we got lunch in Quincy Market.

Ben definitely got the best sandwich, with prusciutto, chicken, mushrooms and some kind of sauce. It was so delicious.

My friend Andrew Haskell is awesome at skateboarding. He made this movie, shot it on 16mm with a Bolex and transferred it by projecting the 16mm film onto a white wall and shooting it with a video camera (hence the flickering effect). He'll finish on film, which is why this is a "rough cut".

He is great. It is his birthday today! Happy Birthday, Andrew.

It was my birthday and we were going to have a party for me. My mom was getting the party ready, it was like a little kid party... just a long table with folding chairs with a plastic table cloth over it and balloons tied to things. That was the extent of the party. I was getting really excited, but then I found out that my dad was taking steroids. I was so sad! I just went to a log cabin I had and sat while it was raining on me. Then my friend Shay came in, with her boyfriend who was in his 30s, which sketched me out because he was so much older than her. I was really scared that he was going to kidnap her because they were planning on taking a trip together. I was also really sad that she was leaving, because then she couldn't come to my birthday party. Then I remembered, oh man it is my birthday party right now! I am late. But hopefully just fashionably late. So I went to the party, and I was 2 hours late. But I realized also that it was only 11am, meaning the party started at 9am. And I thought, Mom, isn't that a little early to start the party? Everyone was mad at me for arriving so late, they though I was selfish and uncaring. But I was still really sad about my dad taking steroids, and they just didn't understand that.

Just did a project in my gender class about the taboo of body hair on women in the US. Why do I have to shave my pits to be pretty? For my part of the project, I photoshopped some pictures of women:

So here is this image of a woman. I asked my class to raise their hands if they thought this was girl was attractive, and almost everyone in class raised their hands.
Then I showed them this picture:

This is what the girl ACTUALLY looks like. This is the original image. She has hairy armpits. I then asked my class to raise their hands if they thought she had become less attractive with this addition of the armpit hair, and again, almost everyone raised their hands.

I just think it is crazy. I mean women naturally have hair on their bodies. Why is it more attractive to shave it? For our presentation we just went through how business pretty much created this social construct of how women need to shave in order to sell products for hair removal and therefore, make money.

Then we tried to talk about WHY men and women now found it unattractive for women to have hair. A pretty big discussion erupted between two people, one side saying that she didn't need to shave her body hair because it is her natural state, and the other side saying that since our society deemed that as more attractive, she should ascribe to those rules or just accept her ostracization (did I just make up that word?).

Who knows. I don't think that women should have to shave their body hair if they don't want to, and I think women should still be seen as attractive if they don't, but I still will shave and honestly, still be caught off guard when I see a woman with hairy legs and armpits.

I am currently listening to the most recent episode of This American Life entitled "Didn't Ask To Be Born". I was cleaning my room while listening to it and I had to sit down because it was such a crazy episode ... if anyone reading this has iTunes and doesn't get the Podcast of This American Life, seriously, get on it. This show! Is so amazing. If I were a WLP or Journalism major at this school, my aspiration would definitely be this show. It's so great.

My grandmother turned 90 on Sunday. 90! Isn't that amazing? March 10, 1919. Born in WWI, lived through WWII, the Great Depression, the birth of suburbs, moon landing, JFK assassination, all these profound events. I asked her about all these things and asked her what was most memorable, and she said the birth of her first child. She also said her favorite president was Eisenhower.

Tonight, she forced me to wear her pajamas so she wouldn't be cold:

We also watched the first half of Oldboy tonight, and when Dae-su eats the live octopus she didn't even flinch. Spunky, spunky woman. I hope I get to live that old and be that awesome.

The process of this screenplay has been worse than any other process I've gone through. But I think I'm done, actually done really done done with it, ready to shoot. In less than two weeks.

One other screen play I'm working on that also has to be fully developed in two weeks for my BFA application.

Today after I got home from work I decided to take a nap on my couch. So many things happened to me in that time between when I was laying on my couch and when I was asleep. I kept thinking that I was doing all these things with my arms, like planting flowers and scratching my butt and all of this stuff, and then while I was thinking about how I was doing these activities I was also realizing that my arms were just at my sides and not moving. But still, at the same time, I was doing these activities.

It was crazy.

My fish died today. His name was Sensei Bundles. He was a beta fish. I had him for almost a year. He lived in my boyfriend's suite and they didn't take care of him so I saved his life. I took him home over this Christmas break and my mom wanted him to stay there so that is the last time I saw him.

He was my first pet that died. I really, really liked him. He was such a pretty orange color and when it was sunny out and he swam through the water it was really nice to watch, and I really liked watching him. He was also funny and would pretend he was dead a lot so that you would pay attention to him. He was a fickle eater.

I don't even have any pictures of him.

I'm pretty sure that last night, I had a dream about a blog entry I made that went on like, forever, about nothing. I'm going to stop talking about this dream because it's so stupid.

But also actually there were some cool parts. Like where we found these bird bones and put them together and they formed this really, really old prehistoric bird and I had to figure out a way to make the bird become alive again. And my mom was moving to Tampa, FL to be closer to me because I went to school in Orlando for some reason.

It's 4am. I am awake. I feel like I need to throw up but it isn't happening (which is pretty much one of the worst things ever). I can either crouch over the toilet, a miserable place, or sit on the couch and update this blog. I'm choosing the latter because I'm sick of holding my hair back for no reason. I don't know why this is going on inside my belly. It feels like there is a gremlin inside of me tearing at my organs.

When I was trying to fall asleep I think I was thinking about casting for films, seeing as that has been my life the past week. But since I've had "Skin" by R. Kelly stuck in my head all day, I just had this image of a really pretty black girl in my head. Like she was the girl I needed to find. It doesn't make any sense. In that song R. Kelly is talk-singing about how pretty and nice this one girl's skin is. I think darker skin is really the most beautiful which is why I think I pictured a black girl.

I feel like I will never get on a normal schedule. Plus I feel like I will probably skip my morning classes tomorrow and I have already missed the 10am once twice. I just wish I could not have my stomach hurt so often, and just go to my classes without this much trouble!!!!!

I was in nickel creek

So I went to this place where Nickel Creek was having a show. And I was talking to Chris Thile and I was like hey I have some instruments with me if you want me to play and he was like yes play with us! So I did. So we were playing on the stage, and it was basically just Chris Thile even though we called ourselves Nickel Creek, and we played a song and it was very good, and then I went to go find another instrument because the strings on my violin slipped and I couldn't get them to go back in tune. By the time we got me an instrument the people running the show told us we were done playing because our time was up.

So then me and Chris Thile are hanging out and he is telling me that he is in love with me and that we need to run away. And I was just like, what the heck. And then he was like no, we need to go now, just remind me what your name is again? And I was like, wait, you don't even know my name? And he was like no I'm sorry I'm so sorry I don't and I was just like it's Kallie... and you're insane.

So then Chris Thile like, went somewhere else and I started talking to the other bands playing at the show, and they were saying that Chris Thile wanted to be exactly like the singer from Sonic Youth, who's most famous song was called Pinhead (not true IRL). Anyways, in my dream the singer from SY was really insane and killed himself, so I knew that Chris Thile wanted to go kill himself. So I had to stop him from doing it because, what would the world be without Chris Thile?

Then I ran to some bank because I needed an accountant or something, who even knows what happened in the next part. So I forget some stuff.

I remember vividly one part where I was sitting on a bed with my room mate and she was sleeping, and I put her hair into a bun and fastened it with bobby pins and it looked so great.

We all were going to a party and had to take a train to get there. It was all of my friends from high school and Pat. We got to this party and I went to the bathroom to watch my hands, and when I was done I saw this girl I went to high school with but wasn't friends with but we still said "Hi! How have you been!" and hugged each other awkwardly.

This party got seriously huge and then the house we were in had to turn into a warehouse to accommodate us all. So I got separated from Pat and was walking around with my friend Shay (not from high school), and some guy came up to Shay to try and hit on her and said "Hey baby you look like you could be Miss America" and it was so stupid so we just walked away.

Then I started running into my teachers from high school. One of them wasn't actually my teacher IRL, he was just my friend's little brother who grew this sketchy thick, black beard. But then I started hear people talking about "Ohh Mr. ____ is here, he's over there"... this IRL was my favorite teacher ever that I haven't seen, IRL, in a long time. So in my dream at this party I was so excited to find him, and my heart stopped beating and everything got really quiet, and then we found him, and he was really excited to see me too, and we hugged each other and it was the best hug ever... I don't even think I can explain it. It was amazing. I had really missed him.

Then while I was talking to this teacher, I saw Pat from a distance and called over to him so he could meet my teacher. Then when they met each other, Pat was like way shorter than him for some reason even though Pat IRL is way taller. Then my teacher started doing all these tests to him like bending his arm in weird ways and like pushing him to the ground. After the tests were over I said bye to my teacher, and Pat said "I know you missed him a lot, but I know that you really love me. So I am going to buy you a carpet."

Then the warehouse turned into Urban Outfitters, and they had all these SPECIAL INAUGURAL CARPETS FOR OBAMA that were just like stupid, stupid carpets with bad screen prints of boars and mice and weird shit on them. But they were only $9 so I considered buying one.

Then my alarm went off, but it was okay because obviously my dream was starting to get a little stupid.

This morning I was having such a nice dream. I was standing with my friend Josh who passed away a few years ago.

I was getting ready to go on a hike with this kid I know who is really intense about hiking, and it was a 6.3 mile hike and I was really nervous because I wasn't sure if I would be able to do it. But then Josh showed up to join us on the hike and he had this big afro and was wearing a bandanna, and we put our hands up like we were going to high five, and then linked them together and waved them around in the air. And I was just thinking, man oh man, it is so nice to see you! I am so excited for this hike, and to spend time with you. I wasn't nervous about the hike anymore. And we started talking about Big Brother, the reality TV show. And we were talking and holding hands, and it was so great, and the forest we were in was so pretty, there were really tall trees and it was really green. And my other friend was hanging ropes from the trees because we needed them to hike for some reason. But it didn't even matter because I was just hanging out with my friend Josh. Then an alarm clock went off and woke me up, and my dream was over. I was so bummed. I really was sad.

headache

Last night I had such a bad headache. I tried a lot of things to try and get rid of it but the only thing that worked was sitting on the ground in a very hot shower with the lights off. I had to do it twice last night. The first time I did it I just had the lights off. It's really nice being in a hot shower on the ground with no lights on. One time, over winter break, I had to do it and i felt like I was in a jungle. My shower at home gets REALLY hot. It was great. I really like the sound of water when you are just sitting in it. But last night, my second shower, I listened to Mozart while I sat. It was really nice. It took me a while to pick out what I wanted to listen to while I sat... I thought about Punch Brothers but for some reason the album was on my iPod backwards and I just really didn't like the idea of listening to that album backwards. Then I thought about The Mamas and the Papas but I just didn't really feel like that either. But then I listened to the soundtrack from Amadeus. The second track, Serenade for Winds, is a really amazing song. When I listen to it I think about how Salieri described it in the film and I feel the same way about the song. It is so beautiful and serene, and very peaceful, and it just makes me feel like I am in another universe. Which was good, because I had a headache.

ribbon dream

Trying to write this before I forget. There was a cat... I was taking care of a cat. There was also an older bald man who wouldn't let me do anything. One of my friends wanted to turn into a bird really, really badly, but he wasn't allowed too... but then he died (but it wasn't sad), and he was wrapped up in ribbon and he looked like a spear, but there were 2 of them. Spears with ribbons wrapped almost all around them. Then the bald man and his mean wife tried to throw them out the window but then the ribbons unwound a little bit and turned into wings! And they could fly. It was so nice. And when I told the rest of my friends that he had died it was okay.

Yesterday when I got out of work (1pm) I was so exhausted. But I still stayed up for about 2 more hours. Around 3:30 I decided to take a nap.

I don't know why but I fell into an insane sleep. I'm not sure if it was a "deep sleep" because I was dreaming so insanely. But I kept kind of waking up, or thinking I was waking up, and thinking that it was summertime, or thinking that somebody was breaking into my room, or thinking I was in a field, who even knows.

This got a lot duller when I uploaded it to flickr. Why. Also, I just learned how to do that fake light leak so yeah, goin' a little crazy, cut me some slack.

I decided I'm going to start keeping track of outfits I wear. I really hate my wardrobe right now so if I find something that I like, I gotta remember it. Maybe it will also help me feel more confident about my looks. Who cares!

fish dream

Last night I had a dream that was about a lot of things that are fading from my memory, but one part I remember was about my fish.

My two beta fish were sitting on the dining room table of my dads house. They were happy and healthy but I didn't have anything to feed them, and I was thinking about feeding them Parmesan cheese because that is small and flaky like fish-food, but then I realized that it would probably kill them. Then, the fish from the brooklyn aquarium with the messed up eye came into the dining room but it was flying, like it was swimming through the air, but then it was just still in the air. It's eye was messed up like it was really puffy and white around the edge,

anyways, it was just floating in the air for a little while, and then it fell to the ground and flopped around and then I knew that it was dead. Then I feel like I went somewhere into the universe but I can't really remember this dream that well.
